Early Brass PHBN Holosteric Barometer / Fahrenheit Thermometer Leyson & Turck MT

This is a well made 19th Century barometer made by Pertuis, Hulot, Naudet et Cie (PHNB) in Paris (France). Pressure is reported in inches of mercury and the two thermometers are respectively in Fahrenheit and Celsius scale. Face marked Made For Leyson & Turck Butte, MT. Shows pressure and textual readout of weather conditions, with adjustable gold hand to mark current weather. Bottom of face shows Temperature in Fahrenheit through a semi circle glass tube (mercury) and to the left Reaumur Thermometer (red alcohol). Extreme high-end craftsmanship all metal and glass. Both thermometer and barometer appear to function properly. The housing and thick beveled glass bezel show no cracks or chips. Glass bezel is tight on face. The piece has not been polished, this is original patina. PHBH was making this precise barometer/thermometer by 1880. This example survives in good original condition, the red spirit in the Reaumur thermometer in slightly bleached red color, brass case retaining some original finish and color with much patina, the movement appears in working condition. Leyson & Turck was a Butte, MT jeweler that began operation in the late 19th Century (1885). This PHBN piece was relabeled to Leyson & Turck, a practice common in those days. Based on what I have been told, this piece dates to that time. Details of the piece based on the face are that this is a large presentation barometer with engraved and silvered 8 brass dial, the upper portion marked Stormy, Much Rain, Change, Fair, Set Fair and Very Fine and having semicircular barometric scale annotated 28-31 inches of mercury, also annotated Holosteric Barometer constructed without the use of liquids, i. The lower portion with twin curved thermometers: to the left a red spirit thermometer, annotated Reaumur Thermometer above and Centigrade below, having twin corresponding scales, the upper scale -10 to 40 degrees (Reaumur), the lower scale 10 50 degrees (Centigrade); to the right, marked Fahrenheits Thermometer, a mercurial thermometer with single scale marked above and below the tube 20 120 degrees (Fahrenheit). The dial open to the center, affording visual inspection of the single capsule movement having 3 capsule, highly-polished C spring and associated components contained within a lacquered brass well. Blued-steel pointer, gilt brass telltale set to heavy beveled glass. Turned pillar with large suspension ring for hanging. This piece is an unusual item that in its day was a very expensive state of the art instrument. Dimensions: 10 wide x 10 deep x 3 high.
