1920 Surveying Aneroid Compensated Barometer – Original Case. This surveying barometric altimeter was used mostly in Colorado in the early part of the 20th century. The case is marked in ink R. Graham / Meeker, Colo. Graham is engraved into the back of the instrument. Graham was County Surveyor of Rio Blanco County, CO, of which Meeker is the County Seat, I believe in the 1920s and 30s. The instrument is in very good condition with lots of character, and appearing complete and working although it has not been tested. The barometer is 3 inches in diameter and 1-1/4 inch in depth. The face is flat clear glass protecting the vernier readout calibrated in feet of altitude (0 to 16000) and inches of mercury (17.5 to 31). A magnifying lens mounted on a sliding ring can be used to read the fine lines of the readout. The face also reads “Paul Weiss, Denver / Made in England”. “Aneroid” is the type of barometer, the mechanism by which the air pressure is measured. This type of instrument is “compensated” for differences in temperature. It is used by taking barometric measurements at two different altitudes. Using the vernier scale, the difference in altitude between the two points can be read to within an accuracy of less than 5 feet. The instrument is typically calibrated before use through a screw adjustment on the back of the instrument. The original case is tan colored leather with white cotton stitching. The interior is lined with purple velvet and is closely shaped to the instrument it protects. It is secured in the closed position with a strap and buckle, and is also provided with an adjustable carrying strap.
