This little instrument is a combination aneroid barometer, thermometer, and compass. It was retailed by Tycos – a sub brand of Taylor Instrument Companies, based here in the United States. The instrument was manufactured by Short & Mason of London, made to be imported to the States. As well as the above listed functions, the barometer could be used as an altimeter, based on the rotating bezel with graduations up to 12,000 feet in increments of 100 feet. The barometer is “watch sized” for portability, and it appears in several Tycos catalogs from the 1920s, including the 1926 catalog pictured in the listing. So this particular model was very likely manufactured in the 20s. The model number is no. 2007KE, again per the catalog. First the bad – the bezel does not rotate and has several scratches and scrapes on its reeded finish; this happened because the aluminum of the case is soft. Also, the leather case has to be opened with a pin or other pointed tool. The barometer passes the “bag test”, and it has been holding accurate to the weather conditions in the local area (with the exception that it consistently is reading 0.80 inches under where it should be). The thermometer and compass are also working properly. The compass has a bezel that twists to lock it for travel and to release it for use. All in all, a wonderful little antique instrument that Tycos originally advertised as “for the traveler, tourist, geologist or engineer” (see catalog page among listing pictures).
