A late nineteenth century Victorian brass or copper cased aneroid barometer by Dubois & Casse, France for the English speaking market. It is marked “ANEROID BAROMETER” at bottom of face and bears the weather indications of STORMY, Much Rain, Rain, CHANGE, Fair, Set Fair, and VERY DRY. A blue steel needle indicates the current reading overlaid by a brass set needle which records the readings as operated by the knob in the center of the glass. The barometer measures 4 7/8″ at front rim, 4 1/4″ at base with a depth of 1 7/8. The glass is cracked in three directions from the center knob. Faint grime is seen on face corresponding to the cracks in the glass. The face of the barometer is not flush to the bezel on the left side. The typical hanging ring is missing but one can see tiny threading in the existing tube at top. Miniscule dent to side of case near rear. Nice bronze age patina to brass or copper case. Shiny brass bezel appears inside the glass. On the back appears a flat headed screw for adjusting the barometer settings. Marked on the back “DC” with an anchor between the letters. Dubois & Casse were quality makers of aneroid barometers in the mid to late nineteenth century. Lucien Vidie invented the aneroid barometer in 1843 and held the patent rights until 1859, thereafter a number of British and French manufacturers began to retail his mechanism. Dubois & Casse were one of these firms and made quality barometers for the French and English speaking markets.
