19th Century Black Forest Carved Weather Station. Belonged to my Great Grandfather who emigrated to Buffalo, NY prior to WW I from Alsace-Lorraine (Germany then, but now part of France). The beautifully carved weather station (Thermometer and Barometer) has been in our family ever since (over 100 years). There are no markings or signature to indicate where the piece was made or by whom or when. The beautifully carved stag has detachable antlers and sits atop a still functioning thermometer which is surrounded by carved leaves. The stag also features glass eyes with distinct pupils. Below that is the barometer that is also still functioning (though I cant attest to its accuracy) which is flanked on either side by rams hanging by their feet – presumably the bounty from a hunt. At the bottom is a finely detailed dogs head, with the dog looking to the right. The dog also has glass eyes – the one facing out has a distinct pupil. Total height, including antlers, is 32.5 and it is 15.5 at the widest point, around the barometer. Generally in very good shape. Three of the antler tips are chipped, Three of the leaves are also chipped. One of the ears on each of the rams is missing the top. The rear horn of the ram on the left has been glued back on. The wood surrounding the barometer has split and needs to be reglued – appears that the screw from the barometers metal ring is what is holding it in place. The rams will also be removed and boxed separately. The item “19th Century Black Forest Carved Weather Station” is in sale since Sunday, May 13, 2018.
