This is a Rare 19th Century American Waltham Aviator Balloonist Compensated Pocket Altimeter Barometer Instrument in its ORIGINAL Wooden Case with Mount… When removed from the mount it is only 1 3/8 Inches (35mm) in diameter… Waltham was known as American Waltham circa 1885 -1907… If your looking at this you likely have seen pocket altimeter / barometers before, but very unlikely you have seen any of this quality and diminutive size let alone one manufactured by Waltham… I use aviator / balloonist in the title because these were often used by early balloonists and dirigible pilots for instrumentation.
