This is an early IMD mercury marine brass barometer around the first quarter 1900s. IMD stands for Indian Meteorological Department. It appears to be a Kew pattern fixed cistern barometer, except that the cistern is made of brass instead of the usual steel. It has signs of usage and would polish up well if desired. The mercury has been removed from the brass sump/reservoir and glass tube that feeds down to the sump/reservoir is pristine. It has a rack and pinion thumbwheel for taking the reading. It has a spirit thermometer and gold slide. The user adjusts the sliding elements to the current latitude and the height of the barometer above the sea. The total barometric correction can then be read opposite the thermometer reading. Ernest Gold proposed the Gold slide in 1914. In the year 1875, the Government of India established the India Meteorological Department. Bringing all meteorological work in the country under a central authority. From a modest beginning in 1875, IMD has progressively expanded its infrastructure for meteorological observations. Communications, forecasting and weather services and it has achieved a parallel scientific growth. We assume the barometer is first quarter 1900s and made in India, if wrong then please advise.
