Wonderful antique Victorian to early Edwardian era French Black Forest style hand carved 27 5/8 tall wall barometer & thermometer with foliate accents, turned finials and great lion or griffin head flanked case! One of a few fabulous old wall barometers that I’ve been getting ready, the other also listed today is a Black Forest hunt themed piece with trophy style deer or stag mount, hare and game bird. This one featuring two impressively sized lion, griffin or gryphon heads morphing from reticulated foliate scrolls and flanking the actual barometer case. The top also accented in what looks like walnuts perhaps and foliage on either side of the thermometer, still mounted on its enamel on copper plaque. The barometer face markings are in French so it’s likely a French made Black Forest style piece or, possibly, a Black Forest carved work incorporating European parts quite common with the Black Forest clocks, often holding Japy Freres, etc. A marvelous decorative piece, don’t miss it! Possibly a few small nips but lo larger chips, damage or repairs to note. There are some visible bug/worm holes in the barometer mount (directly encircling the barometer) with a resulting crack to it at about the 11:30 o’clock area. The thermometer appears to be original, same style, etc. As similar pieces we’ve offered, but the wood plaque it’s mounted to looks like it might have been re-attached slightly lower on the case.
