Italian 38.75 wall barometer, a marked Selon Torricelli piece in solid carved wood with rich gold & green or verdigris painted decoration, large curled or spiraled thermometer and wonderful decorative appeal! The enamel dial bears both the maker mark of Selon Torricelli and also a note of repair below that reads Repare par Delort, Opticien a Toulouse (translates to). Neither the barometer mechanism or, we think, the thermometer are currently in working order so this would be either one for restoration or simply as a decorative accent. Beautiful and some history in the piece and maker. Evangelista Torricelli was born October 15, 1608, in Faenza, Italy and died October 22, 1647, in Florence, Italy. He was a physicist and mathematician. In 1641, Evangelista Torricelli moved to Florence to assist the astronomer Galileo. Evangelista Torricelli became the first scientist to create a sustained vacuum and to discover the principle of a barometer. Torricelli realized that the variation of the height of the mercury from day to day was caused by changes in the atmospheric pressure. Torricelli built the first mercury barometer around 1644. Delort being the retailer in Toulouse, France, at which the barometer was once restored to working condition and likely resold. A fabulous piece, impressive in both size and visual appeal and sure to please. As noted, the barometer is not in working condition, a portion of the mercury mechanism at the bottom is missing (as is a wooden panel backing, judging from the outline of it thats visible). The thermometer is fully intact, no breaks, but we dont think its in working condition either. One chipped leaf tip on the upper portion of the case, left side near the top of the thermometer but no other notable damage there. See pictures for measurements. We’re easy to deal with.
