From my Barometer collection: Here we have an Antique, Nickel-Plated, Gentleman’s Compensated Aneroid Pocket Barometer Altimeter, made by LA FILOTECNICA, MILAN, ITALY. The dial is marked: COMPENSATO LA FILOTECNICA, MILANO 88595. I believe that the number is the serial number for this instrument. Was founded in 1865 by Ignazio Porro, based in Milan, for the construction of optical instruments and measurement, especially for topographic and geodetic use. Initially, the company started out as more of a “school-workshop” whose production was limited to experimental pieces and unique instruments. In 1870, engineer Angelo Salmoiraghi, who had been a pupil of the Porro, joined the company. He transformed Filotecnica in a competitive industry, by expanding the production capabilities. In 1877, he began production of the first Italian sewing machine. At the end of the 1800s, through other collaborations, Filotechnica expanded and improved the range of lenses and precision optical instruments offered in the early 1900s. This instrument is in Excellent’used’ condition. The Nickel-plated cased barometer is in working order and has been verified by use of the’plastic bag’ test. The case shows some very minor wear to the finish on the back of the case. The silvered dial is in very condition with a very clean appearance. Measurement is in “mm of Mercury” instead of “inches of Mercury” as. On English and USA manufactured barometers. No nicks, chips or cracks in the beveled-edge crystal. The revolving outside altimeter ring works as it should. The top crown and bow ring are in Excellent condition. No owner’s marks. Barometer is 2-1/8 in diameter. Nice complete and working barometer!!
