If you’ve followed us for a while you know I’m a big fan of the old hand carved “Black Forest” items that come to us from 19th century Switzerland, Germany, parts of France and Italy, where they pleased the Grand Tour tourists and still please us all today. These hand carved treasures range from whimsical small bears to large and elaborate mantel clocks, wall clocks, wall plaques showing the most awesome anatomical studies of stag, fowl, “fruits of the hunt”. I’ve got more to list so look through the vast collection. I’ve just used quite a few piece in our own 2nd home decoration , Rocky Mountains location, and love the look as well as the heritage since my own ancestors hail from that region and others. The pieces work well in Country Manor, French Country, Ski Lodge or Hunt Lodge and even in a den or office. Everything from a pocket watch case to huge plaques – from needle and thread holders to cigar caddy – these decorative objects survive today a testament to the artisan’s craft of carving wood. Spectacular and large 31″ tall Black Forest hand carved wood barometer, “Fruits of the Hunt theme beautifully carried out in the elaborate casement, plus the aneroid barometer and original thermometer both are in working order. Rarely do we find one in such fine condition, to the inclusion of the stag’s antlers (though one has either an old break/repair, or it’s a factor of the way the carver jointed 2 pieces of wood to carve the antlers, we’re not certain which). A hunter’s horn encircles the aneroid barometer, and you see not only the Stag’s head and game hen, hare, but also a pair of crossed rifles and a hunter’s game bag. Finished out with oak leaves and acorns, this one is superb throughout. Perfect for your home. Very good to excellent throughout. I can see very little loss or chips to report. There is a joint on one antler, clean and fine, and might have been the carver’s joining in the making of it. There are a couple of oak leaves that are missing the very tip of a lobe of the leaf, but not much of that either. The thermometer is intact and working, as is the aneroid barometer. No serious losses at all. All legs and beaks, ears, antlers are remarkably still fully intact on this one. It is 31″ tall (not adding extra for those antlers) and 15″ widest and expands out from wall 4.5 in depth. A remarkable old one, great find! Our photos are large and clear. We do expect our customers to review them all, evaluate the item based on both our description and our images. Thanks for all the compliments – we love what we do!
