Antique HUGE Barometer from Sir John Bennett of London

For sale is a very large, very heavy antique barometer made by Sir John Bennett of London. At the end of the 19th century, I believe Sir John Bennett was the watchmaker to the Queen of England – he has a fine reputation as a quality craftsman. When I found this barometer several years ago it was in sad shape. It had fallen sometime during its life and the glass was broken and the case was dented. I found a local jeweler who specializes in metal work and he was able to remove the dent. I had a custom piece of glass cut and set under the bezel. I was advised against polishing it as it may remove the silver plating, so I’ll leave that to the new owner. The case appears to be brass. Heavy doesn’t describe it. Inside is a non-mercury barometer. The barometer appears to be working although there is no “hand” to set to watch the barometric changes. The original half-circle thermometer is amazingly still intact although it has a few air bubbles. These can be removed with a little skill and some liquid nitrogen, but I didn’t want to risk breaking the thermometer. I’ve sent photos of this barometer around to several universities who specialize in scientific instruments and none of them could give me any info on this particular barometer except that they’ve never seen anything like it. When I took it to the jeweler and to the glass guy for repair, it certainly drew a crowd of admirerers. As much as I hate to part with it I cannot keep all of the cool things I find, so for the first time ever, this is being posted. It measures 14.25″ in diameter and stands 4.5″ deep.
