ENGLISH GEORGE III INLAID MAHOGANY STICK BAROMETER Circa 1800 Item # C102303. An unusually fine barometer with the sharp and distinct architecture of the George III period, the form enjoys a beautiful broken-arch tympanum flanking an original turned brass urn-finial raised on a tiny plinth. The molding absent one side of the crest could certainly be replicated by a skilled craftsman using the right side as an inverse – this molding is just gorgeous. The body of the barometer is finely framed in barber-pole satinwood and ebony stringer inlays. The tiny glazed door opens on original hinges to reveal the inscribed face of the barometer, the original intact mercury vial traveling the length of the device into the turned circular plate at the bottom, this removing to view the bottom of the vial. The shaft features most attractive deep mahogany grains that are set at an angle against. For the collector of fine scientific devices of the period, this is an outstanding acquisition – particularly if you have a craftsman at hand who can fashion the missing molding to restore it back to its original glory. 38 H x 5 1/2 W x 2 1/4 D. Condition Report: Missing molding proper right of pediment. Crack/shrink to panel behind barometer on right-proper side at the top. Original hinges, clasps, finial, internal elements and screws. Tiny twists of wire added at top and bottom to help tighten elements. Old refinish with a gorgeous glowing patina. Please scroll down to view all detailed images of this piece. Silla Fine Antiques is owned and operated by Andrew Silla in collaboration with his wife Grace and our small team. We have a passion for the elements of a rich and comfortable living space – objects that are rich in surface, clean in line, of exquisite quality and of pure structure. After years of collecting, we opened Silla Fine Antiques in 2009 in Germantown, Maryland. What started out as a very focused collection gradually grew into a sizable stock that required a larger space. In 2013, we made another move to be closer to family, moving to a 4800 square foot building on the outskirts of Shippensburg in Pennsylvania. It is rurally situated among the hills and farm fields just 11 minutes from the Blue Mountain exit on Route 76E. Our collection features a large selection of American and English furniture crafted during the one hundred year period of 1740 to 1840, with an extensive collection of both period and “style” Louis XV and XVI furniture and objects d’art. We are very passionate about French bronze sculpture from the last quarter of the 19th century, all examples being selected for their perfect foundry casting and fine hand chasing of details, each a nearly photographic representation of the intended subject. The common thread in all of our objects is an unwavering standard of quality, purity and clarity of line. Each piece is documented with the highest level of transparency using vivid high resolution photography and surgical condition reports. Browse all available items by clicking here. We always welcome your visit at our shop! Every item in the collection is available in the shop to be viewed. Our hours on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday are 9a-5:30p with visits on Monday/Friday by chance or by appointment. The shop is located just seven miles outside of Shippensburg at the junction of Weaver Rd. And Roxbury Rd at 5704 Roxbury Rd. Shippensburg, PA 17257 – when you pull in, we are the building on the far right. Half of the building houses a two-level showroom, the other half our warehouse/packing/restoration center with our photography studio. Because we market our collection primarily online, the building is set up for perfect humidity and temperature controls, free of almost all sunlight exposure or excessive dust. Over the past few years, the antique business has changed significantly with the sale process for much of the finer works of art and furnishings starting and finishing online. While this might seem risky for a new client, in our experience we’ve found that a carefully catalogued and clearly photographed presentation of all angles on an item is a more accurate and less distracting way to evaluate a piece than to visit it in person. Because lighting is clear and awkward angles are made comfortable, differences in oxidization become noteworthy and close ups bring out the handcrafted nature of objects. It is difficult to turn a tall chest upside down in a cramped antique store to examine for alteration, repairs and replacements but it is imperative to do so prior to purchasing! In 2013 we began including high-resolution UV photography with all newly acquired paintings, allowing you to see clearly the history of the surface: repairs, light touch ups, age of the varnish layer and loss. We have worked hard to ensure each object is catalogued thoroughly in advance so you can completely inspect what you are interested in from the comfort of your home. For a return authorization. We offer layaway on a case by case basis with 20% down and equal payments monthly until the item is paid off. Buyers are responsible for unpacking, moving the item into their home and disposing of all packing materials all without assistance from the driver. For a quote from Plycon. IN THE EVENT OF DAMAGE. Damage is incredibly rare and due to very careful packing and preparation we have been fortunate to see only a small handful of damages. However, we understand the disappointment that can occur in this unlikely event and will work hard to help you through the situation. We are happy to provide paperwork or any other required documentation to assist in the claim process. _gsrx_vers_625 GS 6.9.7 (625).
