Century, english banjo barometer and thermometer by shortland smiths. The instrument as a whole measures 30 ¼ inches or 77 cm long, and is 8 ½ inches or 21.5 cm at its widest. The instrument is all carved wood with a black lacquer finish. It is further enhanced with mother of pearl inlay, and heavy applied gold highlights.
The barometer dial is metal with gold lettering and a gilt brass bezel, and is protected by glass. Above the barometer is a thermometer and below it is a humidity gage. The dial of the barometer is marked “shortland smiths british made instrument”, and below this is “made in england”, along with some patent numbers. The condition is as follows; there are age appropriate variations to the black lacquer finish and there is some lifting to the mother of pearl inlay along with some that have flakes and lifted.
