This is an early to mid-19th century (1800s), english wheel (or banjo) barometer crafted by margoschis of leamington. The piece has an overall height of 37″ measuring 10 1/2″ at the widest point. It is not in working order. Lacks the hygrometer, thermometer, setting knob, mercury tubes and rear door. The onion top case remains solid and attractive, showing typical wear associated with age. The base wood is pine, with mahogany veneer and a fruitwood string inlay surrounding the outer front edges. The convex butler’s mirror is cracked with a portion of the ebonised wood surround lacking. The silvered dial is in fine condition as is the brass bezel and convex glass crystal. Both hands (measuring and setting) are in fine condition. The crystal is free of any cracks, chips or fogging. The leveling tube at the bottom is still functional, the silvered dial, signed, “margoschis leamington” is in good condition as well as the brass bezel and convex crystal. A fine example for restoration.
