Exceptional Antique German Barometer by Lufft in Hand-Carved Solid Ebony Case

This instrument represents a rare collaboration between the world-renowned movement maker Gebrüder Lufft and the prestigious German retailer Carl Meyer of Coblenz. The Mechanism: Gebrüder Lufft (Stuttgart). The heart of this barometer is a high-precision aneroid movement bearing the iconic Lufft hallmark (the compass and “G” logo). Lufft was the “Gold Standard” of German instrumentation, famous for providing movements to the most elite scientific firms in Europe. The open-center dial offers a captivating “skeleton” view of the polished brass bellows and intricate mechanical linkages, all in excellent functional condition. The Casing: Solid Hand-Carved Ebony. The instrument is housed in a substantial, circular frame carved from genuine solid Ebony (Blackwood). Unlike more common stained woods, true Ebony is prized for its extreme density, natural ink-black luster, and “sinking” weight. The frame features exquisite hand-carved foliate relief work, showing the incredible skill required to work such a hard, precious timber. The wood remains in superb condition with a deep, natural patina. Signature: Elegantly signed “Carl Meyer, Coblenz” on the lower dial. Typography: Features classic German weather indicators: Sturm, Viel Regen, Regen, Veränderlich, Schön, Beständig, S. Dual Needles: Includes the original blued-steel atmospheric pressure needle and a decorative brass “set-hand” to track pressure trends. Bezel: Encased in a heavy, polished brass bezel that beautifully contrasts with the dark Ebony wood. This piece is in remarkable antique condition. The Ebony case is free of significant cracks, and the Lufft mechanism is responsive. It has been meticulously cared for, preserving its historical integrity and functional accuracy. Retailer: Carl Meyer, Coblenz. Materials: Solid Ebony Wood, Brass, Glass. Style: German Neoclassical / Scientific Luxury. For the discerning collector, the combination of a solid Ebony case and a Lufft movement makes this an incredibly rare find. While many period barometers were mass-produced in oak, this specific model was a bespoke luxury item intended for a high-end estate or professional study. It is a functional work of art that will anchor any collection of fine instruments or blackwood furniture. 6.7″ diameter × 1.9″ depth (17×17x5 cm). Condition: Excellent antique condition with all components intact. Mechanism not tested for accuracy but visually complete and historically fascinating. Important: The age of the piece is determined approximately. Any and all statements by me as to the authenticity, attribution, description, date, age, provenance, title, or condition of the work constitute my judgment and opinion only. Color may vary slightly depending on screen settings and minor surface scratches. No guarantee, no return.
