Beautiful mid-century Barometer Weather Station by Lufft, made in Germany Kaiser Wilhelm I was ruling Germany and the first telephone networks were being launched when master optician Gotthilf Lufft dared to take the first decisive entrepreneurial step in 1881 in Stuttgart: The 33 year old founded the company Mech. The company was based on production of barometers with a metal membrane cell as measuring element. The vacuum container reacted to changes in the ambient pressure by expanding to greater or less extent. Lufft had been able to collect years of experience in the construction of physical and mathematical devices: first as assistant at the Stuttgart Polytechnikum and since 1872 as an independent. Metal barometers were already known in German at that time, but still had to be imported from France. Lufft penetrated this market niche with the new company. Within 20 years Lufft advanced to the market leader in the metal barometer field. Between 1914 and 1918 the company supported the rise in aviation and produced nothing but altimeters. These altimeters based on his membrane cells – had been added to the product line shortly before. When the war was over the company converted the production to peacetime barometers. Lufft himself passed away in 1921. His son-in-law took over reconstruction.
