ORIGINAL ANTIQUE WATKIN PATENT COMPENSATED NO 720 BRASS CASE BAROMETER – J HICKS 8,9, & 10 HATTON GARDEN LONDON. This is a great piece. I have bought some scientific instruments in the past as having spent years in a biology lab in my previous life has exposed me to many different kinds. When I saw this piece, I was pretty excited. I have seen one other Watkin Patent barometer in the past and remember doing the research. All the research I did yielded what I kept finding was a pocket version of the barometer that you can find at various auctions and high end dealers. THIS IS NOT THAT. This is a larger, perhaps desk version, that I cannot find another example of. Measuring 4 5/8 inches in diameter, all the other Watkin Patent barometers I have found measure 3 1/4 inches. It is also 2 1/4 inches deep as opposed to 1 1/2 inches for the pocket version. A wonderful original brass case in excellent condition with just some minor discolorations and scuffs. Original hanging loop at the top. The face is the usual silvered metal that shows some scuffing and discoloration. Original hand shows some bending but still present. I was able to take the glass bezel off but was not able to get the face off (I didnt know how and didnt want to force it) to see what is inside. It looks and feel as though it is the original mechanism in there. If someone can teach me how to take the face off, I can add pictures of the inside mechanism as well. Do your own research on this incredible scarce original 19th Century English Barometer. A scarce example of an important maker. Old triple dial aneroid barometer marked Watkin Patent Compensated No. Hicks 8, 9, & 10 Hatton Garden London. It measures 3 1/8 inches in diameter. Henry Watkin was granted U. Patent #364692 in 1887, see: google. Com/patents/US364692. His English patent 3425 was granted March 11, 1886. It is has some aging to the case, display, but only a little on the copper/brass metal body. I do not know when it was last tested for accuracy or if it works.
