This very rare barometer in Birdseye and tiger maple was made by Paul Courti OF Exeter he was working from 1830-to 1860, I would assume its on the early Side of that with the wood choice this is the first example from this period that we have seen, most of his work was with mahogany or rosewood and this is a true gem perhaps he custom made it for someone. Now function there is some loss to wood bordering thermometer, and I can’t tell if there is mercury in it? This wheel banjo type barometer is very attractive with beveled glass covering the etched barometer portion. The oak is in pristine condition as is the barometer face and glass. The carved oak portions feature a floral motif. The only issue is it is missing it’s original 10 thermometer. I bought it without it. I also do not know the maker. This Has a Beautiful what appears to be Tiger Oak , Hand Carved Wood Case that could well have been carved from a large single piece of wood for the main body. The front appears to have been stained dark because the reverse is lighter. Thermometer lists an older scientific system of measurement. It has Farenheit on one side and uses older REAUMUR on the other. The REAUMUR lists both the temperature of FREEZING and the temperature of BLOOD HEAT at 98.. This a raised glass covered Barometer. Its dial is an Ornate Metal Dial with Black Lettering in Good Condition with light discoloration on one side. Barometer, on dial reads STRAND 433 LONDON. Both instruments are set on top of the wood and do not go through the wood. We have not opened or attempted to open either instruments and have left them as we received. The hand carvings appear to be large fruit or It has been suggested that the top ones appear to some to look like breasts… It is heavy and measures approximately 28″ Long, 11″ across and 2 3/4 at widest point where carvings are located… The Barometer and Thermometer are working but we can not verify their accuracy. On the Reverse the two farthest out side carvings appear to have been added to original base at the time it was made and professionally sealed and is only seen as such on the reverse. At each end is a brass fitting for wall hanging. We love this piece and we know we will never find another like it and has taken us a while to list..
