For sale is an early 20th century mahogany cased Tycos Stormograph labeled Barograph Barometer (Short & Mason) in overall nice condition. The elegantly shaped, five beveled glass paneled enclosure rests over an 8-capsule barometer movement and eight-day clock drum with platform escapement. There is a visual incorporated reporting dial display incorporated within the mechanism. The whole assembly sits on an attractive mahogany base, with bracket feet and functioning chart drawer. This barograph is engraved as a Tycos product, which was a trade name of the Taylor Instrument Company in Rochester New York, and was originally intended for retail sale in the U. Marketed products by Taylor exclusively from 1908 until 1932, so this unit was produced within that time frame. Taylor marketed their products designated for U. Short and Mason were amongst the leading early English manufacturers of recording barometers (barographs) of that period, and these remaining. Stormographs are in high demand. Includes the original Ivory plaque with an Almer Coe & Company, Chicago retail identifier. The unit appears to be in overall good condition, with minimal wear and nice finish, considering that it is approaching 100 years of age. The mechanical 8-day clock drum is functional and includes the removable dust cover and internal winding key. There are a few light blemishes on the outer glass surfaces, related to general use from over the years. All five beveled glass panels appear to be original to the item. There is some noticeable discoloration (finish wear) as seen by the photos on the dial display, predominantly on the left side of the face surface. This only affects the background lighter portion of the dial. All reference lines and other printing are still present and readable. The ink bottle contains ink, but the stopper is currently sealed against the bottle collar by age, and I have not attempted to force it open. As shown, there is some overall minor oxidation, as to be expected, on the brass components and plated capsule barometer unit. Again, I have not attempted to clean, polish or service the unit. There are no cracks, repairs or other noted structural defects in the wood areas that I can determine, and the finish appears consistent with an item of this period, with only a minor change in brightness between the inner and outer stain finished surfaces when the protective enclosure is opened, and slight indications of lacquer wear at contact points for a piece of this vintage. Please examine all photographs carefully for reference of the best overall summary of condition of the unit. The photos are considered as part of the listing description and more accurately indicate the actual condition of the item than I can put in words. Overall, this would be a beautiful and relatively unique piece of early scientific history to display proudly in ones personal collection.
