Early 1800’s wheel barometer with thermometer scale calibrated from 30º to 110º Fahrenheit. Mahogany case with boxwood edge stringing and inlaid with shells and flowers. Broken arch pediment with central wood finial. Replaced glass tubing in the back is excellent and will work, (will need mercury). No breaks, chips or cracking to the glass. Minor marks and wear. Antique Tognetti & Co Weather Station with Shell Inlay in Wood Case Glass Tubes & Stoppers Chester England. Recently acquired it at an estate sale. Would make a great gift or keep it for yourself! Quite an Antique English Weather Station here. It was made by Tognetti & Company of Chester, England (Note how impressed impressed in cursive into the silver metal barometer face along with saying “Warranted”). This piece dates back to the early to mid to latter 1800s, but that is just a guess. You be the judge before acquiring. Any assistance in refining the manufacture date of this Weather Station would be appreciated. Your identity would be kept anonymous. What a wood case this weather station has! The case is probably made of mahogany wood. Check out the wood inlay of the sea shells up by the thermometer and then the shell inlay at the front bottom and top of the case. There certainly is some loss of veneer to the the case. Most notably on the left top of the wheel where the barometer resides. An old wood patch at the bottom of the case. The decorative top is still in place at the top of the case. The brass or wood finial that would have been in the middle is no longer there. The rear wood door of the case is securely attached by two hinges. The lock latch is still in place. The old metal hanger is still on the back of the barometer case as well. The numbers and names on the silver metal face are engraved or pressed into the face, not just stenciled or painted on. The barometer hand is still in place as is the hand to set next to the larger hand to not the last reading one had. The hand still moves when activated by the brass knob below the face. The fluid is still in place in the thermometer and it appears to be working. The barometer component of the weather station is not operational. The brass bezel and glass over the face of the barometer is in place over the barometer face. One of the two screws that hold the bezel in place is loose. The thermometer at the top of the Weather Station is in place as is the glass and wood frame around it. The mercury is still in the thermometer as well. Cannot speak to the accuracy of the thermometer. The glass tube is still in the back of the case and has mercury in it as well. There are two glass slides that go into the tubes and they are in place as well. This is a great project Weather Station here just waiting for the right person to restore it to the piece’s former glory. The Weather Station is 38.5″ tall (37″ not counting the brass hanger), by 10.5″ across, by 2″ wide. Let us know if you have any questions or need additional pictures. A weather “app” from 150 to 100 years ago, this one still works beautifully and does it with fabulous presence and style. Wall-hanging case is a work of art. A bit of a Black Forest look to it, but these old beauties are often French made. You’ll want one if you love Black Forest look, or if you lean toward French Country decor or English Manor – or just if you like something old and beautiful to tell you what tomorrow’s weather will be. Definitely gets it right as often as does my iPhone app, and more accurate than the news. Sometimes the old simple methods are the best. My Dad’s home still has the old barometer my Mom bought for him when we were young. And I can still hear the tap-tap as he ticked the glass cover to double check weather before setting up an airplane for a day’s outing together in the air. Or before going hunting. There’s always a history to these old ones. Science tools, sure – but also a beautiful piece of furniture. Just try not to reach out and touch it! Can’t be done. Very good to excellent condition, aneroid barometer is working fine, and the old original thermometer is also undamaged and works. Of course it’s in French and centigrade, owing to the origin and pedigree being fine old French. I see no chips and no breaks. There are no splits or losses to the case, all carved and hand made of wood. The aneroid barometer is working, as noted, and thermometer is without damage and working, too.
