Heres a nice clean and all original 1860s Woodruffs Stick Barometer made by Charles Wilder of Peterboro NH. Appears to be mahogany body and caps. Curved glass is original. Silvered face still good. Temperature gauge still works. Original mounting brackets intact. Original reservoir cover with remnants of plating still there. When disassembled I found the glass tube was broke where it is mounted to the reservoir. Otherwise the tube is intact. Measures approximately 39 1/2 tall. The stick barometer is very old and needs restored. The wood is old and very dry, Looks like mahogany veneer at one time which is peeled off in places. I open the back There was no broken glass inside. Its 37 inches long and 4 1/2 inches wide at the top. It is also marked Wooddruffs 1860 patent. Antique wood cased chas wilder cottage thermometer-barometer peterboro n. The thermometer appears to be accurate compared against the one at my house. Overall the piece has wear, is dusty/dirty, has stains & scratches. The other sides barometer , as seen in pics is dirty, no idea how it works or if it does work. Not so much dirty fluid inside just looks odd, maybe how it is supposed to be. Overall wood case measures about 9-5/8th”s x 2-5/8th”s. Glass of therm about 6-7/8ths. Offered is a very nice stick barometer signed by charles wilder, peterboro, nh and with woodruff’s patent dated june 5, 1860. The wood is mahogany which is generally in very good condition with some light blemishes on the top and a small piece of missing veneer. The barometer is in clock case form with arch bonnet having a silvered dial for thermometer and barometer which is enclosed with a glazed door. The pressure scale has a vernier and the thermometer scale is fahrenheit with “blood heat”, “summer heat”, “tempe rate” and “freezing”. On the back there is a panel which can be unscrewed to access the mercury column tube and at the bottom is the iron mercury cistern.

The measurements 37 1/4″ tall, and approximately 4 1/2″ wide and 2 1/2 deep. As a successful businessman and prominent citizen charles wilder was an active member and supporter of his church. He served as a representative to the state legislature in 1869 and 1870 and was also a town moderator in 1869. Gurley instrument company of troy, new york.
