1900 French barometer has lovely inlaid wood decoration. Both thermometer and barometer appear to be working. The shield shape has lovely inlaid bell flowers, highlighted by small circles of mother of pearl. Case appears to be solid mahogany with fruitwood marquetry. Thermometer is in degrees centigrade. Barometer is labelled in French (”Tempete / Grand Pluie / Pluie ou Vent / Variable / Beau Temps / Beau Fixe / Tres Sec”). This translates as Storm / Heavy Rain / Rain or Wind / Variable / Nice Weather / Very Nice Weather / Very Dry. There is a makers mark on the back panel as shown in the last photo. Total: 20″ Tall x 9″ Wide x 2 Deep. Thermometer: 5.5″ x 1.125″. Only notable condition issue is a missing MOP circle. Wood is in good condition commiserate with age and use. No unusual finish issues. I try to list EVERY flaw which would be commented on something in an antique or vintage condition this does not mean all imperfections resulting from normal wear & use require comment. This is a wonderful early set of instruments that were made by Short & Mason of London. This is basically a pocket weather station with a Singers Patent Mother-Of-Pearl faced compass. The barometer/altimeter works perfectly and has been tested. The compass also works perfectly and the crown serves as a lock knob for the face. It appears that the thermometer has a little crack in it right by the 60 degree F mark. The backing is made out of bone or something similar. The compass and barometer are gilded brass bodies and superb. The leather case’s button latch works perfectly and the leather is in very nice shape. The compass and barometer measure 2″ in diameter and the thermometer is 2-1/2″ long. The case measures 4″ X 6-1/2″. All of our items are very securely packed. Offered here is this stunning antique circa late 1800’s wheel barometer and thermometer with inlay mother of pearl mahogany wood case. The face of the barometer is marked Coulson Newark. There is a door on the back which opens up to the glass tube for the thermometer. The door has some old tape on it which can be removed if desired. The door is held closed with two small latches which turn and hold it in place. The tube still has its original mercury in it but there is an air bubble in the mercury. I have a cork in the end of the tube so no mercury will come out from the top of the tube. The tube is fully intact and free from damage. The original threads or strings are in there also. The barometer and thermometer are both in original condition as is the case. It’s an absolutely beautiful piece and possibly even a one of a kind, or at least very rare. We have owned this for a long time and have never come upon another like it even through lots of researching. It measures 38″ long x 14″ wide at the widest point.
