I have bought some scientific instruments in the past as having spent years in a biology lab in my previous life has exposed me to many different kinds. When I saw this piece, I was pretty excited. I have seen one other Watkin Patent barometer in the past and remember doing the research. All the research I did yielded what I kept finding was a pocket version of the barometer that you can find at various auctions and high end dealers. THIS IS NOT THAT. This is a larger, perhaps desk version, that I cannot find another example of. Measuring 4 5/8 inches in diameter, all the other Watkin Patent barometers I have found measure 3 1/4 inches. It is also 2 1/4 inches deep as opposed to 1 1/2 inches for the pocket version. A wonderful original brass case in excellent condition with just some minor discolorations and scuffs. Original hanging loop at the top. The face is the usual silvered metal that shows some scuffing and discoloration. Original hand shows some bending but still present. I was able to take the glass bezel off but was not able to get the face off (I didnt know how and didnt want to force it) to see what is inside. It looks and feel as though it is the original mechanism in there. If someone can teach me how to take the face off, I can add pictures of the inside mechanism as well. Do your own research on this incredible scarce original 19th Century English Barometer. A scarce example of an important maker. A very nice original American Peterborough, N. Stick barometer, probably from the mid to late 1860’s. The thermometer is replaced and does not keep accurate temperature. However, everything else about this piece is original. It retains a rich, dark and untouched finish. The brass latch on the door is original. The door retains its original wavy glass with air bubbles. The barometer appears to be in functioning order. The tin plate is present on the back of the barometer- which is almost always missing. There is one small nick to the decorative wood trim on the lower part of the instrument (shown in 9th photo). The tall case clock form of this barometer is truly eye catching, and the condition for its age is really quite good. The finished could be cleaned up a little bit if you desired. I always preferred to leave it honest looking. It measures 37.25″ long by 4.5″ at it’s widest point. These instruments don’t come to market very often. Don’t miss your chance to own it.
