Wonderful antique French mercury barometer. Louis XVI ormolu style with elaborate cast bronze leaves and polychrome paint. Features a large squirrel tail thermometer and decorative set hand. Scales are printed in French with outer scale metric and inner scale’Paris Inch’ – an official scale in use since Charlemagne (used for 1000 years), favored by Continental scientists until the (French) metric system became more widespread. Very detailed and rare beefy French Patinated Gilt Bronze Barometer. Barometer is working perfectly. Floral and wreath decorations with Pineapple on bottom. Double wreath loops to hang from the wall. Last quarter 1800’s I believe. This is not your typical barometer made of wood or metal or combination. This is a all bronze barometer with engine turned dial. Made for the wealthy. Heavy, dimensions are 12 inches tall by 6 inches wide. The gilt could use a light cleaning but ill leave that to the new owner. Its possible there is a matching clock out there though. A barometer is a scientific instrument that is used to measure air pressure in a certain environment. Pressure tendency can forecast short term changes in the weather. Many measurements of air pressure are used within surface weather analysis to help find surface troughs, pressure systems and frontal boundaries. I believe the adjustable arrow is for you to turn to current condition and see the change over a period of time. This antique French anaroid barometer just came back with us from France. It has a bark metal housing with gilded bronze top and bottom decorations. The side of the housing also has gilded shell decorations. The barometer has just been serviced by our clockmaker, who installed a new glass on the front window. The condition is very good, there is some wear to the dark housing consistent with age. Measurements are: 11 3/4″ by 10 1/4″ and 4 1/2 tall.
