Lockwood brass mounted, mahogany veneer banjo / wheel type wall hanging barometer. The barometer features large and signed j. Lockwood – bolton dial along with having a dry / damp dial, a fahrenheit / centigrade thermometer and a “warranted correct” spirit level. The back of the case opens and the original glass siphon tube, rack and pulley are present. The original key is also present and overall the barometer measures 37” in length by 10 1/2” at its widest point by 2 3/4” deep (including its curved glass lens). Condition: the barometer is complete and original. The pulley strings has separated from the glass “drop” weights and the short tube is damaged (no mercury). For your consideration is this late 19th century aneroid barometer that is marked on its face “compensated/made in england/keuffel & esser co/ny”. The barometer is 2 3/4 inches in diameter and 1 1/8 inches thick, has a brass housing and a beveled crystal. It comes in its original leather over wood case, which has some issues. Inside the case is an inspection document from a portland, oregon, scientific instrument shop that is dated 1923, which is no doubt the last time the barometer was serviced – it would certainly need to be serviced and adjusted again for it to work properly. As i write this, the local barometric pressure is slightly under 30, and the instrument reads 30.35. Since i bought it from an estate just yesterday, i have no idea if the needle moves at all. The barometer is in remarkably good condition, with no dings or dents in the housing, the crystal has no damage, and the dial has a little age darkening. The case is intact but barely, with the hinge partially broken. There is considerable loss to the leather, especially on the back, and slight loss of the wood. All in all, it’s a very nice old instrument. Very fine c1885 short & mason london gilt brass pocket barometer in orig case. The barometer is a top quality example made by short & mason ltd of london england, circa 1885. The barometer features a finely engraved silvered dial, beveled glass crystal and rotating reference bezel.

There is no damage and the barometer is a nice size for carrying or display measuring 3-1/2″ long across the crown handle or 2-3/4″ wide by just under 1 thick.
