Altimeter – Barometer in it’s original silk & velvet lined case (Case in bad condition with termite holes and termite droppings). French Made and Marked RF in a circle. Also marked ” Barometre Altimetrique Du Colonel Goulier Compense” in 3 lines. The instrument measures 4.75 diameter aproxand appears to be near mintwith 100% nickel? The French trained most of our Pilots and Balloon crews and weresomewhat ahead of the US in air warfare in 1914 – 1917. A very rare aeronautical item from The Great War. Jules was trained partly in his fathers workshop in Paris and then with several other craftsmen, including a clockmaker. During the 1870s he worked in the manufacture of telegraphy equipment. He is said to have collaborated at this early period with E. Marey, the experimental physiologist who devised electrical and photographic recording techniques. In 1882 he formed a partnership with his younger brother Max, as Richard Frères, and although this was dissolved in 1891 the RF monogram was retained as the firms symbol. Noted for design of scientific barometers in 1880s. The success of the recording barometers lead to the rapid extension of the design to other forms of scientific and industrial recording, including thermometers, pyrometers, anemometers, dynamometers, chronographs, various forms of electrical measuring, and so on. Richard enregistreurs achieved enormous success during the 1880s. At same time specialised in production of stereoscopic camera equipment, producing cameras and viewing equipment from 1893 into the 1930s. Having been personally owned and managed by Jules Richard for thirty years, in 1921 the business became a public company. I’m moving to a much smaller place and sadly I must downsize. The Barometer was made in France by the renowned instrument maker Jules Richard in the latter part of the 1800’s. Jules Richard’s father Felix worked with Bourdon the inventor in the mid 1800’s and they were the first to make this kind of barometer. Jules Richards stamp (cartouch) can be seen on the structural part of the mechanism along with the word Brevete (French for patented) stamped in the middle and the. At the other end. It’s a very clever and intricate design that has been working steadily for the last 140-150 years. It is 5 1/8 inches in diameter (not counting the hanger) and 2 3/8 inches in depth. The dial is printed on the back of thick beveled glass. The writing is in French and the words Barometre Metallique are printed along the bottom. The setting pointer works as it should. The hanger is tight and sturdy. There are no cracks or chips on the beveled glass. There is what I believe to be a locking knob on the mechanism’s brass upright but I won’t fool with it. There is also a hole in the middle of the back that allows for calibration. All in all this is a wonderful example of a very rare and desirable barometer that anyone would be proud to own.
