It’s very interesting. I have so many questions.. However the positioning of the mercury and the two little dots consistent with the engravings Anthony two little pins or nails in the tubes can be moved up and down the market, the high and low spots with a little magnet I have done this. It’s interesting that there’s both mercury and alcohol in the tubes is generally just a rather peculiar and interesting little item. 13 inches long made of copper and the backing is white glass i think. Perfect for the News weather girl in your life!

As found don’t know much about this item as of how it works, I think this is a rare item, the front reads Compensated Made by J. Hicks London, Eng For Paul A. On the backside has numbers scratched on 33997. Dial rotates when turning the stem. Size is about 2 in diameter. The case shows wear, front pushbutton of the case is missing. ORIGINAL ANTIQUE WATKIN PATENT COMPENSATED NO 720 BRASS CASE BAROMETER – J HICKS 8,9, & 10 HATTON GARDEN LONDON. This is a great piece. I have bought some scientific instruments in the past as having spent years in a biology lab in my previous life has exposed me to many different kinds. When I saw this piece, I was pretty excited. I have seen one other Watkin Patent barometer in the past and remember doing the research. All the research I did yielded what I kept finding was a pocket version of the barometer that you can find at various auctions and high end dealers. THIS IS NOT THAT. This is a larger, perhaps desk version, that I cannot find another example of. Measuring 4 5/8 inches in diameter, all the other Watkin Patent barometers I have found measure 3 1/4 inches. It is also 2 1/4 inches deep as opposed to 1 1/2 inches for the pocket version. A wonderful original brass case in excellent condition with just some minor discolorations and scuffs. Original hanging loop at the top. The face is the usual silvered metal that shows some scuffing and discoloration. Original hand shows some bending but still present. I was able to take the glass bezel off but was not able to get the face off (I didnt know how and didnt want to force it) to see what is inside. It looks and feel as though it is the original mechanism in there. If someone can teach me how to take the face off, I can add pictures of the inside mechanism as well. Do your own research on this incredible scarce original 19th Century English Barometer. A scarce example of an important maker. An antique English traveling brass compensated pocket barometer and altimeter by J Hicks London , leading maker. The altimeter does rotate. The word’compensated’ indicates that this barometer automatically adjusts the reading for changes in temperature, thereby giving a more accurate reading. Compensated barometer with an outside altitude ring. I did some research on this and from what im seeing but not sure it seems to be an earlier piece as most of the later barometers i seen had a higher number on them. Couldnt find anything on the 459 number on the face of this piece. Circa 1890s JJ Hicks London England Pocket Barometer Altimeter w/ Case! This is a J. This measures 2 ½ across and has a thickne. We believe the glass to still be original.
