He opened a second shop in New York in the early 1840s, and retired in 1885. Was in the United States 72 years and in New York City 46 years; he died at New York City June 12, 1896. The Baltimore directories list as follows. Optician, 41 South St. 1835-36 Green, James, philosophical instrument maker, 72 Baltimore St. 1837-38 Green, James, philosophical instrument maker, 15 Liberty St. 1840-41 Green, James, mathematical and philosophical instrument maker, 1 S. 1842 Green, James, mathe-sophical instrument maker, 53 South St. However in the index on page 6, under mathematical instruments is James Green, listed as an advertiser. 1847-50 same listing as 1840-41. King advertise as successors to James Green. 1876 directory Edward Meister advertises as successor to F. King came to New York in 1850 and continued to manufacture mathematical and philosophical instruments. The Federal Census of New York City, Ward 23, for 1880 lists James Green as 72 years old born in England. Nicolas Fortin, an instrument maker in Paris in the early nineteenth century, introduced a mercury barometer with a glass and leather cistern so designed that the barometer could be safely moved from one place to another. James Green began making Fortin-type barometers for the Smithsonian in the 1850s, though with a slightly different design to the cistern. This example marked HENRY J. GREEN B’KLYN, N. Was made after 1890 James Green’s nephew and successor moved to Brooklyn.

The wood case is hand carved and fits beautifully. The barometer is marked “1700″, as is the case. As shown, the barometer measures 41 1/4 long. In very good condition with some light wear to the brass fittings. We can’t say for sure if this is in all working condition. Fragile items will be double boxed. We will never use newspaper as padding, although we do recycle clean boxes. Return must be mailed within 60 days of package receipt. We check e-mails nearly every day. RARE Vintage Henry J. Green Brass Rain & Snow Gauge Weather Meteorologist Instrument. This rain gauge comes apart in three pieces. The top piece has a funnel shaped collector that empties into a long cylindrical collection reservoir contained within the main body of the rain gauge. During seasons in which temperatures are above freezing water enters the inner tube (made of brass) and measured with the measuring stick. Oil is used to prevent the water from evaporating between measurements. During seasons when the temperatures are below freezing the funnel top is removed. This gauge is all solid brass! Feet will need to be straightened so it sits evenly. Some dents around the bottom of the cylinder. 4-piece set with an inner cylinder, the large cylinder, a measuring stick, and the top funnel piece. Measures about 28.5 tall with a 8.25 wide diameter. These hardly ever come up for sale! All of the pieces (other than the measuring stick and legged base) are solid brass. The whole instrument weighs about 15lbs. Great for anyone who collects early meteorology / science instruments or who would like to put it in the yard and make use of it again!
