18th C GILTWOOD BAROMETER – LOUIS XVI PERIOD- CIRCA 1760. An elegant French 18th century Louis XVI Period Giltwood barometer.. The barometer is set within an intricately hand carved Giltwood frame with outer neo-classical design and inner beaded bands. The hand painted background displays a circular chart indicating the weather conditions on the outer edge. Above is a carved and pierced cartouche displaying birds atop quivers of arrows and surrounded by laurels of flowers and oak leaves. All original gilt and patina throughout. Some old repairs virtually. 35″ x 19.5″ x 4 deep. The cartouche projects 7 at deepest. Thanks for your interest. Louis XVI Period, also known as Louis Seize, is a style of architecture, furniture. Decoration, and art created during Louis XVI’s 19-year reign in France just prior to the French Revolution. Louis XVI style developed at the end of the Baroque Period and King Louis XVI showed little enthusiasm for the old world styles of the Baroque Period and he set out to create a new ideal that focused on the purity and Ancient Romans and Greeks. Distinct features of the Louis XVI style are linear lines, small repeated motifs, floral medallions, oak leaves, urns, birds, dolphins, ram, and lion heads, and griffins.
