A wonderful, dual cased combined compass and barometer from the late Victorian period! A lovely, wide piece with some excellent heft and presence, it’s in its original custom fitted, double-sided morocco, green silk-lined case that opens to both sides, and bears an early owner’s initials in gilt lettering,’HWA’. The compass is complete with a working travel hold button, and a gorgeous mother of pearl rotating dial, bearing a superb characterful hand painted compass rose with half negative design. The barometer is compensated aneroid example with extremely fine, high quality and charming paint, working outer pressure ring and freely moving needle – though it may not be accurate. One to one side, one to the other – they unscrew to separate if needed. It’s in lovely antique condition with its original crystals, slight loss to the compass rose paint and the catch buttons missing to the case – but this still works fine. It weighs in at 162 grams including box, measures just over 1.75 in diameter and dates to around 1870. What’s more, I offer layaway deals so there’s no need to let any of my listings slip through your fingers – just ask! For security all items are stored in a bank’s safe deposit box and sent fully insured for peace of mind.

From my Barometer collection: Here we have an Antique, J. BROWN, GLASGOW Gentlemen’s Gilt Brass Cased Pocket Aneroid Barometer – Altimeter with Leather Case. James Brown was an optician and scientific instrument maker located in Glasgow, Scotland from approx. 1871 to the very early 1900’s. The dial is marked. The instrument is in Excellent’used’ condition. The brass cased barometer is in very good working order and has been verified by use of the’plastic bag’ test. The case has a bright aged brass patina from being kept in its original case. The back of the case has fancy script initials of the person who owned this (probably a gift). The Moroccan Red Leather case is in good condition with minor wear to the surfaces from use. It has a green felt bottom liner and green satin top liner. The push button clasp is working but has los. Its leather covering from use. The dial surface is in very good condition with a clean appearance. The revolving pointer ring is moved by using knurled knob at the top and works nicely. The beveled-edge crystal has no scratches or edge nicks. The top crown and bow ring are in good condition. A very early, Maker marked, working barometer for your collection! From my Barometer Collection: Here we have an Antique ADOLF FRESE, LOS ANGELES, CA, Gentleman’s Gilt Brass’RARE’ Combination Pocket Barometer, Altimeter & Thermometer. The company discontinued the manufacture of engineering equipment around 1925. The dial is marked with:’COMPENSATED Adolf Frese, LOS ANGELES. This is a RARE! Combination instrument that includes an aneroid barometer and a thermometer!!! This instrument is in Very good’used’ condition. The barometer is in working order and has been verified by use of the’plastic bag’ test. The thermometer is also in working order and indicates changes in temperature as seen in the small curved tube on the face. The brass case has a good aged-patina finish. The dial surface is in very good condition with a clean appearance and the revolving altimeter ring moves as it should. The beveled-edge crystal is in very good condition with no cracks or edge nicks. The top crown and bow ring are in very good condition with some wear to the finish. Barometer is 2″ in diameter and 5/8″thick. It comes with its original red Moroccan leather covered case which h. S green felt and satin linings. T has a good hinge.
