This has to be the most incredible barometer I’ve ever seen! Petite at 9 1/2″ tall by 7″ wide and about 3 1/2 deep. I have no idea how it works or if it works properly but when you pull the tiny lever out at the bottom of the bezel, the hand and bird move. The bird is a gilded almost 3D ormolu. The paper dial is rising up slightly around the edges so this may impinge on the free movement of the bird and hand. There was a covered up chip on the wind God’s nose and it looks as if a piece of the rays on the left hand side near his head is also gone. The back board where the hanging loop is looks slightly offset to the center of his head but when I hung it on a hook it seemed to hang fairly straight but I don’t know how straight it would hang off a nail. The angle of the piece when hung seems to allow to adjust it straighter. It reads Bernadin et Cie Inventeurs. The Dealer I bought it from said it came straight out of a house in Brooklyn NY from a 4th generation French family whose Grandfather was the Ambassador to the USA. I can’t find anything like this at ALL on the internet. This is my favorite thing that I’ve bought in a long time! A truly remarkable one off conversation piece dating to the 19th Century. This very fine late 19th c. Gilded and leather cased pocket barometer / altimeter was made by the prestigious Viennese firm of Otto Schlieffelder and is marked on the face: OTTO SCHLIEFFELDER / IPTIKER / WIEN / GRABEN 29. The dial is also marked COMPASIRT. The barometric function of the instrument and is market on the inside fixed dial and divided with the words REGEN and SCHON with a range between 49 and 79. The altimeter is scaled on a sliding venier and is accurate from 0 to 4000 meters (it could well have worked for most mountain climbing in the Alps). The reverse has an adjustment screw. This gilded brass instrument is in a fitted deep purple hinged hard shell leather case lined on one side with purple velvet and on the other with purple silk. The case is fitted with a brass locking tab and a probably replaced thumb piece for opening (it is a bit stiff but functions smoothly). The overall size of the case is 2 3/8″ in diameter and about 1 1/8″ thick. The barometer/altimeter is 1 7/8″ in diameter and is 5/8″ thick. I have been checking he barometric function of this piece and it appears to function (I have noted travel of the needle on the dial). Chances are it needs some adjustment with the screw on the back to set it with a known barometric reading. This piece is in excellent overall condition with no dents scratches or other damage.
