From my Barometer Collection: Here we have an Antique ADOLF FRESE, LOS ANGELES, CA, Gentleman’s Gilt Brass’RARE’ Combination Pocket Barometer, Altimeter & Thermometer. The company discontinued the manufacture of engineering equipment around 1925. The dial is marked with:’COMPENSATED Adolf Frese, LOS ANGELES. This is a RARE! Combination instrument that includes an aneroid barometer and a thermometer!!! This instrument is in Very good’used’ condition. The barometer is in working order and has been verified by use of the’plastic bag’ test. The thermometer is also in working order and indicates changes in temperature as seen in the small curved tube on the face. The brass case has a good aged-patina finish. The dial surface is in very good condition with a clean appearance and the revolving altimeter ring moves as it should. The beveled-edge crystal is in very good condition with no cracks or edge nicks. The top crown and bow ring are in very good condition with some wear to the finish. Barometer is 2″ in diameter and 5/8″thick. It comes with its original red Moroccan leather covered case which h. S green felt and satin linings. T has a good hinge. From my Barometer collection: Here we have an Antique, PILLISCHER , LONDON, Gentleman’s Gilt Brass Compensated Aneroid Pocket Barometer Altimeter, 1850 – 1920. Moritz Pillischer and his nephew Jacob were known optical and instrument makers located in London, England. They manufactured a wide range of scientific instruments such as early stick. Barometers, hydrometers, aneroid barometers, and microscopes, etc. For which they won many scientific medals at the various Expositions around the world. Moritz started the firm in 1850 and then Jacob took over the firm in 1893 when Moritz passed away. The firm operated until the late 1920’s. The dial is marked: STORMY RAIN CHANGE FAIR VERY DRY COMPENSATED PILLISCHER LONDON. This instrument is in Very Good’used’ condition. The gilt brass cased barometer is in working order and has been verified by use of the’plastic bag’ test. The case shows a little wear with intermittent tarnish. The silvered dial is in very good condition with a very clean appearance. No nicks, chips or cracks in the beveled-edge crystal. The revolving outside ring works as it should. Richard & Joseph Beck were were very well known optical and instrument makers located in London, England. They manufactured a wide range of scientific instruments such as early. Barometers and microscopes, etc. They worked at at several sites in London with the 31 Cornhill St. The dial is marked: STORMY RAIN CHANGE FAIR VERY DRY R. This instrument is in Very Good’used’ condition. The barometer is in working order and has been verified by use of the’plastic bag’ test. Case shows a little wear with intermittent tarnish. The rear case cover has a very nice’tooled / textured’ surface. You don’t see these German Silver cased barometers too often, particularly with a’tooled’ rear surface! There is a tiny metal’nub’ at the edge of the rear case cover (see pic). Not sure what that is The silvered dial is in very good condition with a clean appearance and only a little shading in the upper right quadrant. No nicks, chips or cracks in the beveled-edge crystal. The revolving outside ring works as it should. The top crown and bow ring are in very good condition. Barometer is 2 in diameter. Nice complete and working barometer!! The first of many patents, principally relating to meteorological and clinical thermometers, but covering other items such as barometers, hydrometers and radiometers, aneroid barometers, and various medical appliances utilizing aneroid pressure capsules. He operated his firm in London, England from the early 1870’s to the early 1930’s. The dial is marked RAIN CHANGE FAIR COMPENSATED J. HICKS MAKER LONDON 5892 the serial number. This instrument is in Excellent’used’ condition. The gilt brass cased barometer is in working order and has been verified by use of the’plastic bag’ test. The case shows very little wear. The back of the case has a faint scratched message indicting the this was given as a gift. The silvered dial is in very good condition with a very clean appearance. Was a company that produced scientific (philosophical) and optical instruments and also operated a photographic studio based in London, England. Henry Negretti (18181879) and Joseph Zambra (18221897) formed a partnership in 1850, thereby founding the firm which would eventually be appointed opticians and scientific instrument makers to Her Majesty Queen Victoria, Prince Albert and King Edward VII, the Royal Observatory and the British Admiralty. (Both Negretti and Zambra were born in Italy). Their company were well known for manufacturing high quality instruments such as barometers, sextants, microscopes, telescopes, and photographic equipment. The dial is marked STORMY RAIN CHANGE FAIR VERY DRY. LONDON 26943 (the serial number). This instrument is in Excellent’used’ condition. The gilt brass cased barometer is in working order and has been verified by use of the’plastic bag’ test. The brass case shows very little wear with a nice patina. The silvered dial has a very nice scroll-work etching in the lower half and has a clean appearance. No nicks, chips or cracks in the beveled-edge crystal.
