This is a large wall cased barometer and thermometer, both working perfectly well, housed in a hand carved wood case that has 3 count’em: 3! Wonderful Black Forest bears. Large at 26″ tall and 15″ widest, 3 depth, it’s a fabulous item to add to your decor for the Holidays, or to enjoy all year round in your ski lodge, hunt lodge, cabin or Country French decor. This one is nice and old, at least 1900 or earlier, and each bear has the typical glass eyes and painted mouths of the Brienz, Switzerland bears. The language on the mechanisms is French. Aneroid barometer is working well. Heavy old forest growth wood used, this one is RARE as can be. If you’ve followed us for a while you know I’m a big fan of the old hand carved “Black Forest” items that come to us from 19th century Switzerland, Germany, parts of France and Italy, where they pleased the Grand Tour tourists and still please us all today. These hand carved treasures range from whimsical small bears to large and elaborate mantel clocks, wall clocks, wall plaques showing the most awesome anatomical studies of stag, fowl, “fruits of the hunt”. I’ve got more to list so look through the vast collection. I’ve just used quite a few piece in our own 2nd home decoration , Rocky Mountains location, and love the look as well as the heritage since my own ancestors hail from that region and others. The pieces work well in Country Manor, French Country, Ski Lodge or Hunt Lodge and even in a den or office. Everything from a pocket watch case to huge plaques – from needle and thread holders to cigar caddy – these decorative objects survive today a testament to the artisan’s craft of carving wood. Very good to excellent condition, both in the carved case, which hasn’t any chips I have found (please look it over well in case I might have missed something since usually a leaf tip or some small part will have a chip). Fabulous antique Victorian to Edwardian era Black Forest hand carved 13 wall displayed barometer, a superbly detailed large bear figure holding the barometer over his shoulder and the original thermometer on milk glass below! The case here carved from one solid block of wood, no joints or seams and all in truly fabulous condition! The actual barometer mechanism is intact but the paper dial is quite worn and I’m pretty confident that it is not in working order at the moment. The original thermometer with large bulb is intact, as is the enamel marked milk glass panel. Rare to find these old bear themed wall barometers, the figure itself has wonderful detail, the barometer housing in the form of a section of log held over his shoulder and his original black glass or metal bead eyes are both there. Posed as if standing on a ledge, the thermometer mounted at an angle with vines or roots extending from the sides. Oh, if only the barometer were in a bit better shape BUT, these are always fantastic decorative accents and it’s truly been quite some time since we’ve found a comparable piece in size, detail and overall condition. Don’t miss it! As noted above, the barometer is not working, the paper dial is aged and beaten up a bit. It surely lost its original glass to protect it for some time and suffered because of it. It now has a flat glass though. The carved bear case however is in great shape, just a few small nips, (most visible to the protruding’bark’ around the barometer cylinder). We are listing for your consideration a lovey antique late 19th century german black forest wood carved hanging barometer with 2 birds. This piece is in excellent condition with a slight break to the top birds beak, it has been glued and is 100% secure, some minimal wear to the wood, and the barometer does not work. The glass front to the barometer is held with 3 screws, 1 is missing. No other issues, we guarantee 100% you will be more than happy with the excellent condition. The piece measures 22 1/4″ long x 10 1/2″ wide x 2 3/4″ deep, the barometer has a diameter of 5 1/4″ and the piece weighs approximately 2lb 14oz. The barometer has a lovely porcelain white front and is marked germany. The birds both have a glass eye and the carving of the wood is very nice with great detail. A wonderful example of black forest carving, it would make a great addition to anyone’s collection and or household.
