Offered for your consideration is this handsome antique English barometer. This dial of this piece is marked A. An internet search revealed that his full name was Alfred Daniel Buchanan b. He was born in Cumberland, England and worked as a watch, clock and barometer maker in Boston (England) from 1835 to 1841, before changing professions to dentistry/surgery. As you can see, this is quite a lovely barometer, the case for which features inlays including Mother of Pearl (MOP) as well as some stencil decorations. This is a fairly large piece, standing approximately 42″ high by 13″ wide. As one might expect with a barometer of this age, there is some loss to the inlays/decorations, though the overall aesthetic is quite strong. I have not tested the barometer. Track Page Views With. Antique wall barometer and thermometer combination. Paper of barometer is slightly yellowed but still easy to read. There is a tight crack across the glass of the round barometer face. It could be left as it is, or a glass could be cut to replace. Thermometer is in excellent condition and accurate. The dark oak case is hand-carved with an egg and dart design across the top and base and a center carving. Case measures 7″ by 21 5/8″ X 2 1/4. Superb, rare antique Victorian or Napoleon III era French 37.25 wall barometer, a Pertuis, Hulot, Naudet et Cie. Paris marked piece with original thermometer mounted on a milk glass panel with enamel script markings, silvered barometer dial, ornate carved decoration and elegant ebony or ebonized finish! Yes, it is a bit odd to describe a scientific instrument as beautiful but this one definitely earns that. Large size at over 37 tall and up to 12 3/8 in width. The back of the barometer mechanism is marked PHNB for Pertuis Hulot & Naudet Barometres, Paris. The firm of Pertuis Hulot & Naudet Barometres, was pre-eminent in the manufacture of the aneroid barometers during the 2nd to 3rd quarter of the 19th Century. The dial marked Barometre Holosterique or holosteric barometer, the same as aneroid in that both names denote their lack of fluid to determine the pressure. A marvelous instrument and even better decorative accent, dont miss it! There are a few small portions of the carved wood appliqués missing, the tip off the carved scroll at about 10 oclock position above the barometer dial and two small sections in the carving above the Variable position. The tip of the final is chipped with a bit of rubbing to the ebony finish there and there also appears to have been a finial on the bottom of the piece that has gone missing. There was also a round wooden cover on the back originally but has been lost over the years due to the hinges failing. Lastly, there is a bit of tarnish visible on the silvered dial around the edges. Everything appears intact and in working order but we’ve not tested it for accuracy. See pictures for all measurements. We’re easy to deal with. You are very important! Pestel Dresen holosteric barometer, in ebonized wood case with painted milk glass thermometer on top. Thermometer and barometer are in good condition and apparently work. The case has damage and wear, including missing finials on top and bottom. The top part of the case is warped back slightly. Surface and finish wear throughout the wood.
