Antique aneroid barometer by Dollond & Aitchison of London. Octagonal scalloped shape, nice high-shine finish on the wood, wall mountable. Plate reads, Presented to W. By his colleagues in H. Considered historically significant to have both company names as the maker. While Dollond, a company known for its high-quality instruments, previously produced aneroid barometers, the company shifted focus primarily towards Aitchison’s retail optometry (binoculars, eyeglasses) after the 1927 merger, allowing for a very short window of opportunity to produce or market scientific instruments together. Some wear with age, but amazing condition for almost 100 years old. No deep chips or scratches, some surface wear as photographed, no split wood, wear on hardware. Here we have an Antique , DOLLOND & AITCHISON, LONDON Gentlemen’s Gunmetal Aneroid Barometer Altimeter. In 1752, his father John joined him in business until his death in 1761; later he took on his son, then his nephew. The firm had a shop in the Haymarket, London after 1784, and flourished for over 150 years until its acquisition by James Aitchison in 1913. The dial is marked with:’ RAIN CHANGE FAIR COMPENSATED DOLLOND & AITCHISON LONDON. Based upon the history above the the two men must have formed a partnership for a short time before Dollond’s company was completely acquired. The instrument is in good’used’ condition but I was unable to verify if the barometer is in working order using the’plastic bag’ test. The case shows all of the original gunmetal finish. The dial surface is in condition with a light aging on the edges of the dial face. He revolving altimeter ring works nicely. He beveled-edge crystal is in very good condition with no scratches, cracks or edge nicks. The top crown and bow ring are in good condition. Barometer is 1-7/8 in diameter. He original Moroccan Red Leather case is in good’used’ condition with wear to the outside surfaces. The inside has blue felt lining in the bottom half and blue silk liining on the lid half. The button for the clasp has gone missing over the last 100+ years! A very early, Maker marked, working barometer for your collection! THAT MANY SELLERS TRY TO MARKET AS AN ANTIQUE. Antique pocket barometer/altimeter, by Dollond of London. Pressure readings appear accurate – working calibration screw on back. Plastic bag pressure tested & works perfectly with excellent pointer reaction under pressure. Minimal losses to gold color – presents nicely. Some discoloration to altitude portion of dial face (see photos). Glass in excellent condition. Blue velvet lined case with operating latch button, no losses to leather. Bezel rotates, but with some resistance. 50mm (70mm with top loop) x 15mm. Weight: 77gm (without case). Overall, a beautiful piece. Dollond London Antique brass Barometer 6 1/4 beveled thick glass working. An antique barometer made by Dollond London. Measures 6 1/4 inches across and has a depth of 3 inches. Beautiful beveled thick glass has no chips but it does have a few minor scratches. I note the dial is discolored – should have an even golden toning and parts have worn out and you see the silver coming thru. Mounts on a wall and the casing is metal and has a dark gray aged appearance. The brass portion has some oxidation spots. Based on my plastic bag test the barometer is working. Ten days prior to photographing this Dollond of London pocket barometer/altimeter, I set it to the current barometric pressure, at the same time adjusting the elevation to 633 feet above sea level, which is correct for my front porch. I’d have set it at 642 feet, but I didn’t want to walk upstairs to the bedroom every time I wanted to see if it was working properly. I checked it daily. It works just fine. It remains in its original leather carrying case, the interior bottom lined with velvet, the lid with silk. The hard case has protected the instrument well for around 145 years. I will try to show you an image of one small and shallow dent on one side. To see it, one must roll it around in good light. In other words, it’s a bit hard to find. Something I like about this one is that the elevation is calibrated in feet rather than centimeters. Thank goodness for that. If it showed anything other than feet, those of us who live in the United States, Liberia, or Myanmar would never know how high we were. The range is 0 to 8000 feet. THE CASE: The silk lining hasn’t held up well, but it’s still there. The velvet is fine. I’ll show you images of a couple relatively minor issues with the case. The latch has snapped off, and the bottom is scuffed. I told you they were minor. The case is gilt brass with just the right amount of wear for those of us who love antiques. My red arrow points to the small depression on the side of the case. The glare and reflections make it look worse than it is, but it was the only way I could get it to show up. Hang on, I’ll think of it. It was on the tip of my tongue. Oh well, I can always run for governor of Texas. If it is dusty and dirty when we find it, count on receiving it with the dust and dirt intact. There is, however, one exception. Note missing snap latch.
