This is a wonderful early set of instruments that were made by Short & Mason of London. This is basically a pocket weather station with a Singers Patent Mother-Of-Pearl faced compass. The barometer/altimeter works perfectly and has been tested. The compass also works perfectly and the crown serves as a lock knob for the face. It appears that the thermometer has a little crack in it right by the 60 degree F mark. The backing is made out of bone or something similar. The compass and barometer are gilded brass bodies and superb. The leather case’s button latch works perfectly and the leather is in very nice shape. The compass and barometer measure 2″ in diameter and the thermometer is 2-1/2″ long. The case measures 4″ X 6-1/2″. All of our items are very securely packed. Offered is an 18 carat gold miniature barometer, altimeter, compass compendium. It is Hallmarked with the sponsor’s mark B&S (probably Barnett & Scott), a Leopards head (for London Assay Office), the date letter Q (1891 – 1892), a crown, and 18. The outside diameter is 32.25-mm (1.25-inches). The spring hunter case opens by depressing the knurled knob. The knob is also used to rotate the altitude chapter ring. Note that when the barometer was placed in a ziplock bag, and a slight pressure was applied, the needle moved. The back of case is monogrammed. Offered is an antique18 carat gold miniature barometer, altimeter, compass compendium. It is Hallmarked with the makers initials B&S, date letter Q, and 18. The outside diameter is 32.25-mm (1.25-inches). The spring hunter case opens by depressing the knurled knob. The knob is also used to rotate the altitude chapter ring. Back of case is monogrammed. The barometer movement was carefully removed from the case. One of the ball shaped nuts holding the movement in the case was loose and this is why the adjusting screw was askew and not lined up with the hole on the back of the case. When the movement was removed a series of hallmarks were observed under the movement. Photos will be attached to the listing. The adjusting screw is now accessible from the back of the case. When turned the needle does move. I also placed the barometer in a clear ziplock bag and applied a slight pressure; this also caused the needle to move.
