This antique Aurapole compass short and mason Taylor Rochester Patented April 20, 1915 is a rare find for collectors of scientific instruments. A wonderful, dual cased combined compass and barometer from the late Victorian period! A lovely, wide piece with some excellent heft and presence, it’s in its original custom fitted, double-sided morocco, green silk-lined case that opens to both sides, and bears an early owner’s initials in gilt lettering,’HWA’. The compass is complete with a working travel hold button, and a gorgeous mother of pearl rotating dial, bearing a superb characterful hand painted compass rose with half negative design. The barometer is compensated aneroid example with extremely fine, high quality and charming paint, working outer pressure ring and freely moving needle – though it may not be accurate. One to one side, one to the other – they unscrew to separate if needed. It’s in lovely antique condition with its original crystals, slight loss to the compass rose paint and the catch buttons missing to the case – but this still works fine. It weighs in at 162 grams including box, measures just over 1.75 in diameter and dates to around 1870. What’s more, I offer layaway deals so there’s no need to let any of my listings slip through your fingers – just ask! For security all items are stored in a bank’s safe deposit box and sent fully insured for peace of mind.

Really nice two sided cased Tycos, Short & Mason pocket instrument. One side is the compensated barometer with rotating altitude adjustment up to 12,000 ft. The other side reveals a compass and thermometer (Fahrenheit scale). Instrument condition: Very good; the bezel for the barometer turns easily; the temperature looks accurate (it’s a thin line tube so you have to train your eye); the compass unlocks easily and works; we tested the barometer by putting instrument in zip lock bag and pressing gently watching the needle move. Tarnish around the bezel which will likely polish off, but does not detract. Case condition: Good for age. A bit of leather is missing on part of the rim. One of the two release pins is missing and will need to be replaced. Can open the side w/ missing pin using a stylus or awl. Both case and instrument bear initials: E.
