Up for sale is a large size, vintage barometer, made of beautiful tiered reddish colored cherry wood frame. The barometer has a raised or rounded glass case with clear dials and a brass surround. There is a large brass ring at the top giving the appearance of a large clock. It hangs by a toggle hook set into the back of the barometer (see last photo). To my knowledge, it is in working order, but may need calibration. A very handsome, substantial piece, British and American made as indicated by the dual patent dates. Size: 17 1/2 x 3 1/2 approx. This is a beautiful old barometer by Smiths-made in England. The barometer is mounted in an amazing solid cherry case. It is a heavy piece, weighing 7 lbs. The back still has an original paper chart with instructions for using the barometer. Unfortunately, some of it has come off over the many years it has been around. The barometer is set into a 3.75″ square that is 2.75″ deep, in the back of the frame. The back is marked with several marks. One side is stamped in gold “53 60-62″ In the center, beneath the barometer, CHERRY is stamped and beneath that, there are several numbers engraved into the wood. The front of the barometer is marked I tried to set the barometer with the set screw in back. At first it was turning and then the screw head completely sheared off on one side. Nothing to for the screwdriver to grab. I’m sure the screw can be replaced. I don’t know if it is functioning correctly since I couldn’t set it. There is also a small turn key (functional) in the center front for marking where you set the barometer for keeping track of how the barometer is changing. On the front of the glass, there are two tiny screws missing from two corners. These are for holding the glass and metal frame in place on the wood. One mitered corner of the frame is slightly pulled apart. This can be pulled back together with the proper tools. I’m going to leave this to the new owner. There are numerous scuffs and marks on the wood. The most obvious is on the left side, about in the center. Looks like a bit of light colored paint may be in the scuff there. I don’t know the best way to try and remove it, so I will also leave that alone. There is some tarnish on the metal frame. The glass is fine. So now that I’ve told about all the things that aren’t perfect, I will say that it is still a very nice piece. The wood color looks very nice and still has shine-not dried out and dull.
