Beautiful burl veneer English barometer built Italian designer J. Measures 41 inches tall. Glass tube inside is broken so barometer is not currently working. Thermometer seems to record accurate temps. Wood bracket around thermometer glass is a little loose. Small veneer chip missing at bottom. Please see all photos for condition. At the age of 11, Guiseppe Luigi Casartelli emigrated from Italy to Liverpool, England, joining a relative’s barometer and thermometer-making business. Upon arrival, he anglicized his name to Joseph Louis Casartelli. Moved to Manchester and established himself as an innovative producer of mechanical and optical equipment. Around 1850, Casartelli expanded his products to include microscopes, telescopes, cameras and other optical devices. He also operated a photographic studio when in Manchester. By the 1870s-80s, his products were primarily focused on supplying the heavy industries of Manchester, such as valves and other fittings for steam engines, mining equipment, and magnifiers for quality control in the fabric-making mills. T his is a 19th c. Casartelli barometer/ thermometer measuring 41 in length. It is ornate with mahogany burl veneer. The condition is good considering it’s age. The barometer is not functional as the glass tube is broken inside. There is a small veneer chip missing at the bottom and the glass covering the thermometer is a little loose. The mercury thermometer seems to be registering correct temperatures and all of the glass is in good condition. It is a very attractive barometer and could be made functional by a professional.
