On December 1, Charles accompanied by Nicolas Robert made a much more spectacular flight than De Rozier and the Marquis d&#8217;Arlandes. More scientifically conceived by Charles than the Montgolfiere flight (even to the degree of carrying a thermometer and barometer as well as sandbags), the first man-carrying hydrogen balloon remained aloft for two hours and covered a distance of nearly twenty-five miles &#8211; Edward Jablonski&#8217;s Man With Wings. The top 80 percent is given to the Illustration. The lower 20 is text describing the historic event, the text drawn from the Journal de Paris for December 2-3, 1783.
