Superb Black Forest Hand Carved Barometer and Thermometer with beautiful carving of bird, acorn and leaves. The piece is about 25″ tall and a little over 12″ wide. It is made of european walnut and very detailed carved. It seems to be in working condition. I just brought it over from Germany a couple summers ago. Not quite as old as some we offer, you can tell from the moderately less detailed figures but the theme is always popular and the condition of this one is superb. A rich darker finish, marvelous hunt motif and sure to please. This one has the original thermometer mounted on a slightly convex enamel on copper plaque with enamel numerals/markings. The barometer itself with open view mechanism and outer card dial with markings in French. A lovely piece, dont miss it! Very good to excellent condition. Possibly a small nip or two but I see no larger chips, damage or repairs to note. Original barometer & thermometer intact and appear in fine working order but weve not tested for accuracy. This has to be the most incredible barometer I’ve ever seen! Petite at 9 1/2″ tall by 7″ wide and about 3 1/2 deep. I have no idea how it works or if it works properly but when you pull the tiny lever out at the bottom of the bezel, the hand and bird move. The bird is a gilded almost 3D ormolu. The paper dial is rising up slightly around the edges so this may impinge on the free movement of the bird and hand. There was a covered up chip on the wind God’s nose and it looks as if a piece of the rays on the left hand side near his head is also gone. The back board where the hanging loop is looks slightly offset to the center of his head but when I hung it on a hook it seemed to hang fairly straight but I don’t know how straight it would hang off a nail. The angle of the piece when hung seems to allow to adjust it straighter. It reads Bernadin et Cie Inventeurs. The Dealer I bought it from said it came straight out of a house in Brooklyn NY from a 4th generation French family whose Grandfather was the Ambassador to the USA. I can’t find anything like this at ALL on the internet. This is my favorite thing that I’ve bought in a long time! A truly remarkable one off conversation piece dating to the 19th Century.
