ORIGINAL R & J BECK ENGLISH BAROMETER AND TEMPERATURE GAUGE – often called a SYMPIESOMETER (see definition below) to be mounted on the wall for convenience of reading and display. It features a rectangular framed housing for the barometer and temperature gauge. The framing appears to be made of Mahogany. It was listed as as 19th Century (Victorian Era) device , which would put it in the 1819 – 1901 range of years, but probably more likely 1860. It measures 37.5″ long x 5.5″ wide. Please see the “Condition” section for more details about its condition. Also, please inspect the photos carefully as they may answer many of your questions as well. I don’t know how to perform any adjustments to the gauges (as often there are). The Thermometer has gradations in Fahrenheit and Centigrade from 120 degrees F to 98 degrees (Blood Heat) to 0 degrees. The Barometer has gradations of barometric pressure from 31 to 26.5 and markings of FAIR, CHANGE, RAIN, STORMY. A S ympiesometer is a compact and lightweight type of barometer that was widely used on ships in the 19th century. The sensitivity of this barometer was also used to measure altitude. The sympiesometer consists of two parts. One is a traditional Mercury Thermometer that is needed to calculate the expansion or contraction of the fluid in the barometer proper. The other is the barometer, consisting of a J-shaped tube open at the lower end and closed at the top, with small reservoirs at both ends of the tube. The lower end of the J and its associated reservoir were filled with colored almond oil, while the upper portion and its reservoir were filled with hydrogen gas. Increasing air pressure would cause the oil to be pushed out of the lower reservoir and into the tube, compressing the hydrogen gas into the upper reservoir. The pressure was indicated by the position of the top of the oil. To correct for temperature, a sliding scale was used; the operator would first use the thermometer to set the scale and then measure the pressure from it. Richard & Joseph Beck were were very well known optical and instrument makers located in London, England. They manufactured a wide range of scientific instruments such as early. Barometers and microscopes, etc. They worked at at several sites in London with the 31 Cornhill St. The dial is marked: STORMY RAIN CHANGE FAIR VERY DRY R. This instrument is in Very Good’used’ condition. The barometer is in working order and has been verified by use of the’plastic bag’ test. Case shows a little wear with intermittent tarnish. The rear case cover has a very nice’tooled / textured’ surface. You don’t see these German Silver cased barometers too often, particularly with a’tooled’ rear surface! There is a tiny metal’nub’ at the edge of the rear case cover (see pic). Not sure what that is The silvered dial is in very good condition with a clean appearance and only a little shading in the upper right quadrant. No nicks, chips or cracks in the beveled-edge crystal. The revolving outside ring works as it should. The top crown and bow ring are in very good condition. Barometer is 2 in diameter. Nice complete and working barometer!! This barometer was in our family collection for almost a century! This was passed down to me as a young boy over 20 years ago. Kept in wonderful condition! Please see pictures for details! The design consists of swirls and floral arrangements at the top, sides and bottom. Two peacock-like birds sitting on a bird bath are pictured underneath the thermometer and a single bird at the bottom of the barometer. The barometer has a thermometer at the top and a silvered barometer dial at the bottom. Dial is marked with R. A door is on the back of the barometer to access the glass tubes. Dates to the mid 19th century. There is also a notch on the back to hang the barometer on a wall. This stunning barometer would make a great addition to any antique collection! A beautiful piece to accent any cabin! Currently the barometer is not working. The liquid in the thermometer has dried up/evaporated and needs replacing. A small chip is out of the glass pane over the thermometer and one of the glass tubes in the back is cracked and chipped. It looks like a small piece is missing just under the barometer dial. Minimal wear to the casing. No chips or cracks in the dial. Overall in VERY GOOD condition for its age. Please refer to the photos for the best details.
