Antique aneroid barometer by Dollond & Aitchison of London. Octagonal scalloped shape, nice high-shine finish on the wood, wall mountable. Plate reads, Presented to W. By his colleagues in H. Considered historically significant to have both company names as the maker. While Dollond, a company known for its high-quality instruments, previously produced aneroid barometers, the company shifted focus primarily towards Aitchison’s retail optometry (binoculars, eyeglasses) after the 1927 merger, allowing for a very short window of opportunity to produce or market scientific instruments together. Some wear with age, but amazing condition for almost 100 years old. No deep chips or scratches, some surface wear as photographed, no split wood, wear on hardware. Here we have an Antique , DOLLOND & AITCHISON, LONDON Gentlemen’s Gunmetal Aneroid Barometer Altimeter. In 1752, his father John joined him in business until his death in 1761; later he took on his son, then his nephew. The firm had a shop in the Haymarket, London after 1784, and flourished for over 150 years until its acquisition by James Aitchison in 1913. The dial is marked with:’ RAIN CHANGE FAIR COMPENSATED DOLLOND & AITCHISON LONDON. Based upon the history above the the two men must have formed a partnership for a short time before Dollond’s company was completely acquired. The instrument is in good’used’ condition but I was unable to verify if the barometer is in working order using the’plastic bag’ test. The case shows all of the original gunmetal finish. The dial surface is in condition with a light aging on the edges of the dial face. He revolving altimeter ring works nicely. He beveled-edge crystal is in very good condition with no scratches, cracks or edge nicks. The top crown and bow ring are in good condition. Barometer is 1-7/8 in diameter. He original Moroccan Red Leather case is in good’used’ condition with wear to the outside surfaces. The inside has blue felt lining in the bottom half and blue silk liining on the lid half. The button for the clasp has gone missing over the last 100+ years! A very early, Maker marked, working barometer for your collection! THAT MANY SELLERS TRY TO MARKET AS AN ANTIQUE. This barometer measures 29-1/4″ tall, 11-1/2″ wide at the widest point. The barometer gauge bezel measures 9 across. The thermometer wood case measures 10″ by 2″. Wood case looks like it is oak. Barometer weighs just under 9 pounds. (Important– see this items condition commentary in the following paragraph below). MY COMMENTARY ON THE ACTUAL CONDITION OF THIS ITEM. This barometer is structurally sound and complete. The barometer and thermometer continuously register the correct readings. The glass window over both is undamaged. There is an adjustment on the barometer to adapt to your location. The wood case has a few scratches, scuffs, nothing major. Scratch cover would work. The wood case is not chipped or cracked. Of cylindrical form with chrome/metal case, the open-faced instrument with glass-faced barometer to one side, the silvered dial marked: “compensated” and “aitchison & company new york” and “made in england”, the reverse with curved glass thermometer centering a circular compass with locking switch. The metal cast with banded edge and top with hinged hanging ring.

The barometer does not appear to be in working condition (the hand/interior mechanism is loose). The thermometer and compass are working properly and the locking latch to the compass, though stiff, also works.
There is considerable oxidation to the metal case with some whitish corrosion along the edges and wear to the silvered dials. The leather case is in poor condition with cracks to the leather, losses to the hinges and cover and dirt/soiling to the lining. Please see photos below for an accurate depiction of the condition.
