Thomas Armstrong & Brother Ltd was a well known and important producer of scientific instruments, in particular optical equipment. The company was originally founded in 1825 then known locally as the old Deanery by Joseph Armstrong and was based at 261 Deansgate, specializing in jewelry and silversmithery. Joseph Armstrong was married to Sarah Booth in 1828 and had three sons Thomas, George and Alfred. By the time Joseph Armstrong died in 1851, Thomas Armstrong with the help of his brother George Booth, took over the management of the company having already ran it in for some years prior to his fathers death. It was at this time the company was renamed Thomas Armstrong and Brother Ltd and subsequent expansion into the manufacture of spectacles and optical equipment was started. The expansion was to bare fruit for the brothers and in 1877 the company was officially appointed as the opticians to the Manchester Royal Eye Hospital. Based on Oxford Road. Thomas Armstrong had already formed links with the eye hospital after becoming a life trustee after a donation of 10 guineas. In 1877, the scientific and optical side of the the business had grown to such an extent that the premises were extended to meet the demand for the brothers products. In the years between 1877 1891 the company grew considerably in size and reputation, employing 15 people including Georges younger brother Alfred. By the time the company exhibited at the Industrial Exhibition of 1887, the company had become known for its innovation. It was also at this time that the company acquired additional premises on St Mary Street. Thomas Armstrong had now finely tuned his eye for opportunity and publicity, notably holding the first exhibition of animated pictures and also introducing the now burgeoning city of Manchester to compressed oxygen and hydrogen gases for scientific and demonstrative purposes. During this period the companies reputation was such that in 1891 the company won the contract to supply the War Office. The Board of Trade. And the General Post Office. O with scientific instruments. Towards the end of 1890s and with the possibility of the death of Thomas Armstrong, his son, Frank Armstrong came into the business and the company spread its wings further, expanding into Liverpool in 1904 with the opening of a branch at 112 Bold Street, whilst back in Manchester moving its headquarters to larger premises at 78 Deansgate. It was also at this time that George died, after which Frank Armstrong made his home above the shop. At the advent of the First World War. In 1914, Thomas Armstrong and Brother Limited had diversified further and was now supplying the War Department. With gun sights, elevation equipment and surveying equipment. The company also supplied clocks, watches and submarine detectors to the naval services. Frank Armstrong however stayed with the company for a further 10 years. By the time of the companies centenary in 1925, the company was employing 125 people and had further expanded its services and range of optical and scientific equipment such as microscopes, telescopes, laboratory, nautical and meteorological equipment and now included jewelry and timepieces for which it offered a winding service, whilst also specializing in horn and tortoiseshell spectacle frames. Antique french Art Nouveau barometer thermometer early 1900’s wood stucco

Antique barometer / thermometer. France, early 1900’s, made of wood and stucco. Height : 18″ ; width : 7″ ; depth : 3. Good overall condition, nice details, in working condition. My name is Greg, I’m a French guy who had business in Charlotte NC for 3 years. Unfortunately, I had to move back to France because of a slow activity. I fell in love with the US, particulary Charlotte! So now my only goal is to return to Charlotte, and for that I want to export French furnitures and antiques there! This idea came because of my love for wood and history. It is a great area to find valuable furnitures and smalls because of the proximity of wealthy ski resorts like Megève and Chamonix Mont-Blanc. It is also close to Geneva (switzerland), about 45minutes by car. The Geneva area is one of the richest in Europe due to finance and whatchmaking. Italy’s not to far as well, 40 minutes. So when you’re living and picking in this kind of environment, It is not rare to come across real pieces of art and history. Antique Collectible wooden Barometer Imperial Russian Empire Royal Russia Tsar
Posted on July 15, 2021 and filed under Uncategorized.

Antique Collectible wooden Barometer Imperial Russian Empire Royal Russia Tsar. Device In working condition. The magnificent work of wood masters. Please see the photo. For the first time, the barometer was invented and described in the work Opera geometrica in 1644 by the scientist from Florence (Italy) Evangelista Torricelli. It was a liquid mercury barometer, the pressure of which was measured by the height of the mercury (liquid) column in a tube sealed from above, and the lower end placed in a vessel with mercury (liquid). On the day when Torriceli conducted the experiment with his mercury barometer, the weather was quiet and sunny, and the column of mercury stopped at around 760 mm. Since then, a pressure of 760 mm Hg is normal. Mercury and liquid barometers are the most accurate and are still used at meteorological stations. Their disadvantage is fragility, insecurity and large size. In 1844, the French engineer Lucien Vidy, using the research of the 17th century German mathematics and physics. Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz, designed a fundamentally new, liquid-free barometer, which was called aneroid barometer from the Greek. “Aneros” – does not contain moisture. Barometers built on the basis of the barometer L. Vidi, at the moment, are the most common. In general, barometers, depending on the principle of action, can be mercury, liquid, aneroid or electronic. Aneroid barometer – a device whose principle of action is based on changing the size of a metal box filled with rarefied air, under the action of atmospheric pressure. Such barometers are reliable and small in size. So, the aneroid barometer is a device that is designed to measure atmospheric pressure mechanically. Structurally, the aneroid consists of a round metal (nickel-silver or hardened steel) box with corrugated (ribbed) bases, in which, by evacuating air, a strong vacuum, a return spring, a transmission mechanism and an arrow pointer are created. Under the action of atmospheric pressure: its increase or decrease, the box, respectively, is either compressed or unbent. At the same time, when compressing the bellows box, the upper flexing surface begins to pull the spring attached to it downwards, and when the atmospheric pressure decreases, the upper part, on the contrary, bends and pushes the spring upwards. An arrow is attached to the return spring using a transmission mechanism, which moves on a scale calibrated in accordance with the readings of a mercury barometer (Figure). It is worth noting that, in practice, several (up to 10 pieces) series of thin-walled corrugated boxes with a discharge are applied in series, which increases the amplitude of the arrow on the scale. Aneroid barometers, due to their small size and lack of fluid in the structure, are the most convenient and portable; they are widely used in practice. On request, send additional photos.
