From my Barometer collection: Here we have an Antique, J. HICKS, LONDON, Gentleman’s Gilt Brass Compensated Aneroid Pocket Barometer Altimeter, 1900. Casella of Hatton Garden, London in 1852, where by 1860 he had filed. The first of many patents, principally relating to meteorological and clinical thermometers, but covering other items such as barometers, hydrometers and radiometers, aneroid barometers, and various medical appliances utilizing aneroid pressure capsules. He operated his firm in London, England from the early 1870’s to the early 1930’s. The dial is marked RAIN CHANGE FAIR COMPENSATED J. HICKS MAKER LONDON 5892 the serial number. This instrument is in Excellent’used’ condition. The gilt brass cased barometer is in working order and has been verified by use of the’plastic bag’ test. The case shows very little wear. The back of the case has a faint scratched message indicting the this was given as a gift. The silvered dial is in very good condition with a very clean appearance. No nicks, chips or cracks in the beveled-edge crystal. The revolving outside altimeter ring works as it should. The top crown and bow ring are in very good condition.
