Samuel Thaxter was born in Hingham, Massachusetts in 1769 and died in Boston in 1842. He is first listed in the 1796 Boston Directory as a mathematical instrument maker. In the 1822-23 edition, the business is listed as Samuel Thaxter & Son Joseph H. Great Patina and a VERY heavy Piece. Well known maker and a Quality piece in original HONEST condition. 4 3/4 X 2 Inches. This has some to be expected tarnish but NO damage issues or signs of abuse. It appears to work well and has an adjustable indicator to gauge change. The Glass face also has been etched into quadrants. At some point they painted and there are some paint splotches on the top. I flaked it off with a fingernail and the Patina underneath didn’t change so I assume it has been there for years. There is a PHNB stamp on the reverse and a screw for I assume adjustment. Great vintage piece in great unmolested condition. Please look at the pictures as they ARE of the item you will receive. The item “Antique 1801-18 S.
