PRIMITIVE HARD-TO-FIND ANTIQUE TIN WEATHER HOUSE circa 1870. This is LOVEJOY’S IMPROVED METALLIC WEATHER HOUSE (thermometer/hygrometer) and is another rarely-seen piece. The thermometer is missing entirely and the wax-covered string upon which the rotating figures depend, has long been broken (although the remains are still visible inside), so the hygrometer doesn’t function either.. And the old folks ain’t telling you nothin’!!! The thermometer’s tattered & discolored paper back plate is interestingly marked, featuring such notations as: “ZERO”, “ICE-MELTS”, “TEMPE-RATE”, “SUMR-HEAT”, “BUTTER MELTS” and “BLOOD-HEAT”. The lithographed color remains mostly visible on the floral decals, but understandable paint losses have occurred from years of wear… But one of Lovejoy’s “improvements” was to incorporate corrugated panels for the walls, which seems to have confined the wear patterns considerably. (Please see comparison photos). NEVERTHELESS, the character and “feel” of this piece are vibrant. Please see photos for details and BE SURE TO SEE MY OTHER WEATHER HOUSE. So please be warned that dust, dirt, cobwebs, pet hair, odors (and the ghosts of previous owners) may be present. But I try to be a good guy in all of my trading activities and if there’s a problem of any kind, I encourage you to contact me, nevertheless. So please see listing for details.
