Fine antique Victorian era 42 marquetry inlaid banjo style wall barometer, beautiful walnut veneered case with silvered maker marked plaque, barometer dial & thermometer mount in removable glass-fronted box and all in wonderful condition! Surely a descendent of J. Stoppani & Zoon (Son) of Amsterdam c. Various spellings of the last name are found on barometers in both England and the Netherlands, as is common with the Italian immigrant instrument makers who moved into northern Europe in the late 18th century. This one marked F. Stoppani, London (Stopanni, Stopani) on the silvered plaque at the bottom, which also doubles as a level. The back has a hinged door, behind which and inside the barometer case is the’j-tube’ mechanism. Not anywhere near an expert in this style but everything appears to be there but I don’t believe it’s in working condition at the moment. A gorgeous decorative piece, working or not! The case, dial/face and thermometer are all in superb condition, a fabulous decorative piece. I really know very little about this type of “j-tube” system though and have no idea if it is in workable condition though I’m sure it could be restored if so desired.
