Offered is a very nice stick barometer signed by charles wilder, peterboro, nh and with woodruff’s patent dated june 5, 1860. The wood is mahogany which is generally in very good condition with some light blemishes on the top and a small piece of missing veneer. The barometer is in clock case form with arch bonnet having a silvered dial for thermometer and barometer which is enclosed with a glazed door. The pressure scale has a vernier and the thermometer scale is fahrenheit with “blood heat”, “summer heat”, “tempe rate” and “freezing”. On the back there is a panel which can be unscrewed to access the mercury column tube and at the bottom is the iron mercury cistern.

The measurements 37 1/4″ tall, and approximately 4 1/2″ wide and 2 1/2 deep. As a successful businessman and prominent citizen charles wilder was an active member and supporter of his church. He served as a representative to the state legislature in 1869 and 1870 and was also a town moderator in 1869. Gurley instrument company of troy, new york.
